7 Common Cat Health Problems and How to Treat Them

Cats are independent and are good at hiding their pain; it’s quite difficult to know about their diseases. In this blog, we will take you through some of the most common health problems in cats and how it affects them.

1. Kidney Problem

Kidney is a vital organ for a cat’s daily function. If kidney-related problem are not treated, it can turn out to be life-threatening for cats. The damage to Kidney is noted when over 75% of tissue is disrupted. This stops toxin filtrations from cat’s body and makes them severely sick.

2. Dental Problem

Dental diseases in cats are common health problems that occur due to poor hygiene and nutritional deficiency. Some of the major dental diseases in cats include the following:

  • Gingivitis: It causes inflammation of the gums and can be treated by professional teeth cleaning.
  • Periodontitis: It damages gums and teeth. The severity of the disease can be only indentified by the vet. Your vet will examine cat’s teeth and will have to remove them if the damage is severe.
  • Tooth Restoration: It occurs when dentin in a cat’s tooth erodes; the only solution is to remove the affected tooth.

Common dental disease symptoms in cats include bad breath, difficulty in eating, irritated gums, discolored teeth, and drooling.

Regular brushing of your cat’s teeth improves cat’s dental hygiene. Also if you still see the distortion of your pet’s teeth and bad breath, take your pet for a dental check-up and professional cleaning.

3. Fleas and Ticks

These are common parasites that host on animal’s skin like cats and dogs. Although the chance of fleas and ticks infestation is more in outdoor cats, indoor cat can also be affected by fleas and ticks. The transmission of fleas and ticks in cats is through other animals and insects when your cat comes in contact with infected dogs and cats or wood.

Common Symptoms of fleas and ticks includes itching, flaky skin, and irritation. There are a lot of ways to treat fleas and ticks in cats including chewable treatment, spot-on solutions, flea and tick collars and more.

4. Worms

Worms are small parasites that transmit into a cat’s body through other animals or insects in the form of larvae. The worms live inside the cat's internal organs, harming and impairing their functionality. If left untreated, it can fully deteriorate, leading to serious illness or even death. Common types of worms affecting cats include the following:

  1. Tapeworms
  2. Hookworms
  3. Roundworms
  4. Whipworms

In order to treat and prevent worm infection in cats, deworming treatment is essential. Several kinds of deworming solutions are administered at regular intervals.

5. Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a common health problem we all face in our day-to-day life and cats are no different than us in this case. There are multiple reasons for the cause of diarrhea in cats such as change in diet, food allergies, and intolerance to a new treatment, intestinal worms, kidney or liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease.

If you see your cats suffering from diarrhea do not panic, it could be simply because of food intolerance or bacterial infection. However if your cat’s diarrhea is continuing for several days, consult your vet for a complete health checkup for your cat.

6. Cancer

As like in humans, several kinds of cancer can occur in cats. Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers in cats. Most often a visible tumor is a sign of cancer. However, not all tumors indicate cancer. This makes routine vet visits crucial for cancer detection.

Continuous diarrhea, frequent vomiting, sudden weight losses are a common symptom of lymphoma cancer.  Cats that suffer from FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) are more likely to diagnose with cancer. Moreover, other reason for cancer includes genetics, too much exposure to smoke, nutritional deficiency and more.

7. FIV

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a virus, which is similar to HIV in humans. This triggers a range of illnesses and infections making cat’s life miserable. It is a non-curable disease that can only be controlled with the right treatment and  vet check up.

Symptoms of FIV include:

  • Fever
  • Dental disease
  • Discharge from eyes or nose
  • Sneezing
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Coat hair loss
