Is Shaving Dogs Necessary?

We, as pet parents, would want our dogs to not suffer in humid and tropical climate. Hot summers may convince you to consider shaving your pet, allowing them to feel cooler. Interestingly, the inherited double-coat of dogs is keeps them cool in summer and warm in the winter. This temperature regulation is interrupted when the dog’s coat is shaved.

Dogs with a single layer of hair-coat may benefit from a professional clipping. This allows them to stay cooler and make their hair coats manageable. Mostly, dogs with hair can be considered for a ‘summer haircut’ rather than those with a furry coat.

Do’s and Don’ts for shaving your dog

One should extremely be careful when shaving their dogs. Here are some suggestions to consider while shaving your canines:

  • Bathe your dog well before you shave
  • Don’t shave them too close to the skin
  • Use sunscreens suitable for dogs to protect them from sunburns, eg.−Petscreen SPF23 Sunscreen Spray
  • Use equipments used by professional groomers to shave your dog
  • Be careful while shaving near the sanitary areas on their body
  • Look out for loose skin while trimming the coat

If your dog has a matted coat, take help from professional groomers to avoid damaging their skin. You can also use professional grooming shampoos and conditioners to clean their coat. A few of these are:

  • Frontline Pet Care Dark Coat Shampoo For dogs
  • Dorwest Clean & Fresh Shampoo
  • Dorwest Scent and Shine Shampoo
  • PAW 2 in 1 Conditioning Shampoo

Dog Breeds that shouldn’t be shaved

Shaving a double-coated dog could ruin their coat forever. Your dog’s hair will grow in patchy patterns, interrupting the natural growing and shedding cycle of their double coats. Shaved dogs may also develop skin irritations and sunburns. Here’s a list of dog breeds that should not be shaved:

  • Alaskan Malamute
  • Australian Shepherds
  • Belgian Shepherd
  • Border Collie
  • Chow Chow
  • German Shepherds
  • Golden retrievers
  • Huskies
  • Pomeranians

Advantages and Disadvantages of Shaving Dogs

Shaving the long hair of your pet can make the coat manageable and prevents infestations of parasites like fleas and ticks. Furthermore, it can help keep the dog clean and prevent matting. After the shave, dogs appear to be happier and become comparatively active- convincing their human parents to groom them frequently.

On the other hand, shaving your dog will expose its skin to harmful ultraviolet rays and may lead to skin damage and skin diseases. Thick coats scientifically insulate dogs from solar heating, but clipping them would make dogs more uncomfortable and warmer. Furthermore, a section of the under-coat hair will grow unevenly with varied texture, compromising the aesthetic quality of the dog’s  coat.

Ending Note

Shaving your dog isn’t a necessity. Realizing the advantages and disadvantages of shaving is very important to avoid ruining your dog’s comfort and health. In either situation, taking extra care by bathing and brushing their hair frequently, will allow their coats to nourish and stay healthy.
